About Kaeng Krachan National Park

Kaeng Krachan National Park

Established in 1981, Kaeng Krachan National Park spans over 2,915 square kilometers along the border between Thailand and Myanmar. The park features rugged hills and dense evergreen forest that supports one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems in Thailand. Rivers, waterfalls, and mountain ranges define the geography of the park, with the Phetchaburi River and Kaeng Krachan Reservoir as significant water bodies that sustain the lush landscape. The area protects a vast array of wildlife, including endangered Asian elephants, gibbons, hornbills, and Malayan tapirs, making it a key conservation area for Southeast Asia’s fauna. Birdwatchers are drawn to the park’s more than 400 species of birds, including rare species like the Great Hornbill and Silver Pheasant. Visitors can explore various trails ranging from easy forest walks to challenging treks to viewpoints that overlook the forest canopy and distant hills. Popular activities include bird watching, camping, boating on the reservoir, and nighttime wildlife spotting. Kaeng Krachan also includes the Kaeng Krachan National Wildlife Sanctuary, which further enhances protection efforts. Despite its popularity, the park remains a remote and largely undeveloped destination, providing a wilderness experience away from Thailand’s busier tourist zones. Visitors are drawn to the serene environment, the chance to observe marquee wildlife species in their natural habitat, and the natural beauty of waterfalls and panoramic vistas. The park is especially popular during the dry season when trails are more accessible and wildlife activity peaks.
